Favorite Downtown Restaurants

Special Occasion (or not, just really good):

Curate - Wonderful Spanish tapas and great atmosphere. Our current favorite.
Mela Indian Cuisine
– Local favorite on Lexington – great Indian fare.
Zambra
– Funky festive atmosphere with wonderful eclectic menu of tapas. Mostly Spanish-influenced fare.
The Market Place Restaurant – For a creative farm-to-table dining experience on charming Wall Street, try the Market Place.

Cucina 24 – Wonderful fine Italian – try the 5 antipasti for $22 for a delicious sampling of their cuisine. Mussels and brussel sprouts were amazing.

Rezaz – Great mediterranean food and warm atmosphere in Biltmore Village. Yes, you’ll have to use your car to get there but it’s worth it – only 5-10 minutes from downtown.
The Lobster Trap – Fresh lobster brought to you daily from Maine. The Lobster Trap is on the first floor of the condo building – they will even deliver upstairs. The Trap also brews their own beer.

The Admiral – What used to be a “dive bar” in W. Asheville is now a hip place with a very talented chef. It’s already been discovered, but still feels like your in on a secret when you are lucky enough to get a reservation there.

Casual (Everywhere in Asheville is actually casual, these a little more so than those above):

The Laughing Seed – Wonderful vegetarian restaurant on Wall St – very creative menu.

Vinnie’s Neighborhood Italian – Great classic Italian fare just north of downtown, five minutes max. You will not leave here hungry – tell owner Eric Scheffer Lynne and Steve sent you. Steve loves their eggplant parmesan and I love the pizzetta appetizer. Nice wine selection too.

Rosetta’s Kitchen – Another vegetarian restaurant with a real Asheville hippie vibe – good comfort food. Steve and Lynne are addicted to “the mountain”.

Posana - A new discovery for Lynne – their little advertised secret is that their entire menu is gluten free. Don’t let that stop you – I love gluten and this is one of my go – to places if I want something fresh and healthy. Nice outdoor pation too for watching the street performers. This belongs on the dinner list as well.

Chai Pani – Indian Street fare, on Battery Park. A totally different menu from Mela – good for an inexpensive casual lunch.

Bouchon Street Food – This is the less expensive sister of the local favorite French bistro, Bouchon, on Lexington. The creperie is in the courtyard just off Lexington – a hidden gem – perfect to have lunch and sit outside on a nice day. Savory and sweet crepes as well as other salads, sandwiches, etc. Good value.

Coffee, Wine and Dessert:

Our favorite spot for coffee, hands down, is Izzy’s on Lexington Avenue, just a few blocks from the Urban Nest. Their espresso is the best, and you will get an authentic mixer with the locals here. For chocolate, the ultimate destination is the French Broad Chocolate Lounge on Lexington Avenue – headed south. They have chocolate in every shape and form, as well as wine, coffee (French press) and cheese plates. If you love chocolate, you should not miss this place. Be forewarned there is often a long line on weekend nights. If you just want to pick up a locally made box of truffles or salted caramels, drop by the Chocolate Fetish on Haywood Park. This place is fantastic as well!

Wonderful wine can be found at 5 Walnut Wine Bar – the neighborhood “Cheers” hangout with a great variety of wines by the glass in a wonderful casual ambiance with local artwork. Also fun is the Battery Park Book Exchange and Champagne Bar in the historic

The Books Bar

Grove Arcade. This eclectic local favorite is filled with a variety of books with a wine bar complete with waitress service nestled in the middle of it all. Outdoor seating too.

Shopping & Galleries

Working Girls Studio – Lynne’s studio that she shares with friend and painter Eli Corbin at 30Battery Park, Suite 200,  less than two blocks from the condo. Until their website is live, you can see Lynne’s work here. Call if you’d like to stop by and see Lynne’s collection of images of Asheville – great souvenirs!

Castell Photography – Asheville’s only photography gallery with work from international artists. A beautiful space and owner Brie Castell is continually pushing the bar to bring in new talent.

Kress Emporium – Next building from ours has the Kress Emporium, which showcases the work of over 80 regional artists and craftspeople along with a collection of fine antiques and collectibles.
The Wine Guy – The Best Wine Store in town just a few minutes drive from condo. Check their site for wine tastings and dinners.
